THE ROC NATION EARLY SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The Roc Nation School's mission is to prepare students for careers
in every aspect of modern entertainment through experiential
learning with industry experts and access to professional
opportunities. As a way to advance its goal of closing the college
completion gap, the School is working with strategic partners in
New York City Public Schools and the US Department of Education to
implement the Roc Nation Early Scholars Program-- providing high
schools students the opportunity to take up to twelve college
credits and participate in university life here at Long Island
University's Brooklyn Campus at no cost to students.
Job Title: Roc Nation Early Scholars Program Mentor
Basic Function and Scope of Responsibilities:
The Roc Nation School is seeking passionate and dedicated students
to guide and support high school students as mentors in the Roc
Nation Early Scholars Program. This program invites high school
students to take up to twelve credits in sports and music, with the
goal of becoming part of our academic community over the course of
two years and into their college careers. The student mentor will
play a critical role in providing these students with the guidance,
resources, and encouragement they need to succeed academically and
personally.
Responsibilities:
--- Serve as a positive role model for high school students
participating in the Roc Nation Early Scholars Program.
--- Provide academic & personal support, helping students navigate
their coursework in sports & music.
--- Assist students in developing time management, study skills,
and goal-setting strategies.
--- Offer advice on balancing academic responsibilities with
extracurricular activities.
--- Foster a welcoming & inclusive environment for high school
students, helping them integrate into the university community.
--- Guide students in exploring college and career pathways in
sports, music, and related fields.
--- Offer insights into college life, including the challenges &
opportunities students may face in higher education and the
transition to college
--- Conduct regular check-ins to ensure students are on track to
meet their academic and personal goals.
--- Help students identify resources (e.g. tutoring, study groups,
and academic advising) to support their success.
--- Lead small group discussions and activities designed to enhance
the learning experience in sports and music.
--- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other mentors to organize
events and workshops that promote personal development, academic
success, and college readiness.
--- Encourage students to participate in university events, clubs,
and organizations related to their interests in sports and
music.
--- Assist students in building a strong sense of community within
the Roc Nation Early Scholars Program, fostering peer relationships
and a sense of belonging.
Time Commitment:
Participation in the Roc Nation Early Scholars Program includes
mentoring activities throughout the academic year. Mentors are
expected to support their mentees for the length of the Early
Scholar's time in the program. Mentors are expected to meet with
their mentees regularly and attend and support program workshops
and events, as well as mandatory orientation and trainings. It is
expected that each Mentor will have 3-5 mentees and spend about
eight hours per week (not all in one day) throughout the semester,
with an overall limit of 230 hours over the academic year.
Education Requirements:
Mentors must be enrolled and in good standing in any school at LIU,
with a strong academic standing demonstrated by their GPA,
engagement with their coursework, and performance in classes and
lessons.
Training, Skills, Knowledge, Experience:
--- Passion for sports, music, or related fields of entertainment,
with a desire to bring that to high school students to help them
succeed.
--- Prior experience in mentoring, tutoring, or leadership roles is
a plus.
--- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
--- Ability to relate to high school students and foster a
supportive, encouraging environment.
--- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, with a strong
desire to make a positive impact on all New York's communities.
Working Conditions:
This position is located on LIU's Brooklyn Campus, and
responsibilities may include weekend activities.

Interested students are encouraged to submit a resume and a short
personal statement explaining why they are interested in becoming a
mentor and how they will contribute to the success of the Roc
Nation Early Scholars Program students. The statement should
discuss their interest in giving back to their community and
helping high school students from diverse backgrounds succeed in
college and future careers in sports and music. A letter of
recommendation is encouraged, but not required.
